| Green PracticesHelp Out The Pollinators This Spring | | You can preserve the lives of our native pollinators by waiting to do yard clean up until mid-may. Resist the temptation of spring fever!
We get it, it’s tough to turn a blind eye to the “messy” garden, especially when gardening magazines, catalogs, and TV ads provide temptation daily.
Waiting to mow and remove yard debris gives flowers in the lawn a chance to bloom and insects that have been overwintering in the garden a chance to wake up and leave their winter sheltering spots. The start of the growing season is a critical time for hungry, newly emerged native bees. A good rule is to wait until the daytime temperature warms to a consistent 10°C (or 50°F).
While you may be eager to get outside and play in the garden – there will be time enough to toil in the soil before you know it!
When it is time to plant, consider adding in more pollinator friendly plants.
| Ask ESATThe Employee Sustainability Awareness Team is here to answer your questions!
Q. Is there any more info on the Ford Lightning? Is it a pool vehicle? Can we check it out to use? If not, what department has it? Why did they get one and not other departments?
A. Thank you for your questions on the Ford Lightning. Currently, it is under the possession of Facilities as a maintenance vehicle. Part of the reason that other departments don't have one is that there is insufficient charging infrastructure at County buildings to support electric vehicles. The City of Fort Collins is leasing us one of their chargers at the Civic Park Parking Garage to support the Ford Lightning. Later this year, Fleet's new building in Loveland will have the charging infrastructure necessary to operate EVs as pool vehicles. To hear more information about the Lightning, watch the recent presentation to the Commissioners.
