March 31 now Farm Workers Day

HB26-1339 renames the March 31 celebration of agricultural labor to Farm Workers Day. With sexual assault allegations against Cesar Chavez, now deceased leader of the union of farm workers, it became clear that a renaming was appropriate. Is it time to make some other changes to how we honor leaders who have made horrific errors in behavior and judgment both recently and in the deep past. Confederate war generals, no doubt slave owners, have retaken their honorifics at military forts. High schools and college buildings are also named after slave owners. Epstein guys are still off the hook. As we're reconsidering our historical roots and our present, what should be our premises and understandings related to sexual aggression against women and social justice for those who deserve and should have it?

Farm workers are critical to getting crops timely to market. It's right to honor these men and women on March 31 for Colorado's Farm Workers Day.
