2023 Symposium registration is open! Join us December 6.

Hello, and welcome.

With so many difficult things happening around the world right now, we are happy to be the bearers of good news. We are excited to announce that we have been selected as a winner of the National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications for our podcast for the second year in a row! The award, given by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in partnership with Schmidt Futures, honors Kristan Uhlenbrock's outstanding writing and reporting for Water Under Pressure. If you haven't listened to it yet, be sure to check it out, along with the current season of our Laws of Notion podcast, Clearing the Air.

Registration is now open for our annual Symposium on December 6. This year's theme is Ethics in Science Communication and we have a stellar line-up of keynotes and panels lined up so you won't want to miss it. Plus learn about our new Colorado Science Policy Fellowship grant award to provide the state legislature with direct access to scientists kicking off this month, and much more below.

Read on, and thank you as always for your support.

Registration Open for
2023 Symposium

Join us on December 6 for our annual virtual one-day symposium, with an in-person evening reception and panel, featuring thought leaders, policymakers, scientists, the media, and our next generation of leaders. The 2023 Symposium explores the ethics of how we communicate scientific findings to serve the public and decision-makers as threats to trust in science continue to mount. We will discuss where science has been useful in public policy decisions, where it hasn't, and where we need to rethink our communication strategies to be truly effective.

Institute for Science & Policy Awarded
Science Policy Fellowship Grant

We are excited to announce our award of a $100,000 grant from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) State Science Policy Fellowship Planning Grant Initiative from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The award will support the planning and development of a Colorado science policy fellowship program to provide legislators with direct access to scientists, beginning in November 2023. The goal is to enhance the interface between science and policy, contributing to more informed and effective decision-making at the state level.

The application received bipartisan support from State Senators Chris Hansen (D-31) and Cleave Simpson (R-6), and institutional support from the Colorado Local Science Engagement Network, a collaboration between the University of Colorado Boulder and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

  • Jack Ihle, Vice President of Regulatory Policy, Xcel Energy’s Colorado Operating Company
  • Ian Lange, Associate Professor, Economics and Business, Colorado School of Mines
  • Kathleen Staks, Executive Director, Western Freedom

The panel shared their visions for a path to a more clean and sustainable global energy future, beginning here in the Mountain West. The recording is available now on our YouTube channel.

Perspectives

It’s often the case that areas with higher average temperatures have worse air quality, which disproportionately impacts developing countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania. Increasing green coverage in urban hotspots is a key strategy to reduce air pollution and improve air quality. And, coupling that with innovative technological solutions related to air purification, renewable energy, electrification of transport, data analytics, and telemetry are enabling us to better monitor and manage rising global temperatures and improve health outcomes.
