Dear County Commissioner Kefalas,
It is such a pleasure for our organizations to continue to work together to plan our annual community-wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. We are grateful for the strong partnership among Colorado State University, the City of Fort Collins, Larimer County, Poudre River Public Library District, Front Range Community College, and Poudre School District. We are looking forward to this meaningful community event on January 20.
I’m writing today to invite you to walk as part of the community march at 1 p.m. and to participate in this year’s program at CSU’s Lory Student Center following the march. During the program, there will be a reading of the City of Fort Collins and Larimer County inaugural joint proclamation for the event. As a community leader and key partner in this event, we would be honored to have you join us in this historic moment by reading a short section of the proclamation alongside leaders of other partner organizations. This program will begin at the Lory Student Center Main Ballroom at 2 p.m. following our annual march.
Please respond to Dr. Jennifer Williams Molock at jennifer.wil...@colostate.edu by January 10 with your availability to participate in the reading of this proclamation. If you are unable to participate in the program on January 20, please let us know if there is another leader you have identified to represent your organization.
This year marks what would have been Dr. King’s 96th birthday! What an exciting opportunity this presents for us to unite in honoring his legacy and advancing the work he began. The march begins at Washington Park and will highlight significant landmarks along the route, including homes where some of the community’s small but vibrant first Black residents lived in the early days of Fort Collins.
This year’s theme is “Justice Everywhere: Mission Possible.” It is taken from one of Dr. King’s quotes, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” reminding us that while progress has been made, there is still much to be done. In addition to the celebration, we will be accepting donations of clean, slightly used clothing to benefit The Homeward Alliance, a local organization supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. More details about this effort can be found HERE.
We look forward to confirming your participation. Dr. Jennifer Williams Molock will reach out to you with additional event details. Thank you for partnering in this community event, which promises to be more impactful than ever.
Sincerely,
Amy
