  • Chimney Hollow Open Space will boast a variety of recreational opportunities.
  • The open space is expected to open in 2027.

The Larimer County Department of Natural Resources unveiled its recreation management plan for the future Chimney Hollow Open Space, and it includes hiking trails, boating and swimming in Chimney Hollow Reservoir, and access to nearby Carter Lake.

The county expects to open the 1,847-acre Chimney Hollow Open Space in 2027. It is located 5 miles southwest of Loveland.

The main dam at Chimney Hollow is almost 320 feet tall and getting very close to the final height of 350 feet. Crews are on schedule to wrap up construction this summer and begin filling the reservoir in July, according to Northern Water, which manages the reservoir's water storage.

Here are highlights of the plan, which went through a series of public feedback meetings and input from a technical working group, according to a county news release:

  • Trails: 10 to 12 miles, including along the reservoir shoreline, connector trail to adjacent Carter Lake and loop trail options with the possibility of limited use or directional use trails.
  • Chimney Hollow Reservoir access: Concrete boat ramp and floating dock as well as areas for swimming and wakeless boating.
  • Day-use amenities: Parking areas with picnic shelter, toilets and information kiosks.
  • New trailhead South end of Carter Lake with a trail connection into Chimney Hollow Open Space.
  • Parking lots: Access to the reservoir and open space, horse trailer parking and spaces at new trailhead at Carter Lake.
This map shows management of Chimney Hollow and adjacent properties.

When filled, the reservoir will include 90,000 acre-feet of water with 30,000 acre-feet of water to supply 12 irrigation companies and municipalities.
