Project Newsletter: Woody Biomass Strategy

September 2024

Update 4

This project will work to develop a comprehensive woody biomass strategy for Larimer County with a focus on liability biomass management. Our goal is to further wildfire mitigation efforts, climate resilience, and the ability of our natural systems to store carbon.

Progress Snapshot

The month of August resulted in the first draft of a woody biomass data analysis and was rounded out with an onsite visit to processors in the region.

Reviewed First Draft of Woody Biomass Analysis

Our team at PlanIT Geo presented the first draft of volume and characterization estimates of woody biomass in Larimer County. This first draft incorporated the nuance of treatment feasibility, gathered through collaboration with project data advisors and partners at the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute.

The next steps for analysis will be to consider accessibility due to road infrastructure, as well as consider details as they relate to assumed treatment prescriptions.

Touring additional solution sets

The Advisory Team, in conjunction with our Boulder County partners, spent time touring local woody biomass utilization solution sets.

Industry Partner: Charm Industrial

Charm converts woody biomass that doesn't have an available market into a stable, carbon-rich bio-oil and then injects it into orphaned wells. Their goal is to remove CO₂ permanently from the atmosphere.

Boulder County Community Forestry Sort Yard

The Advisory Team visited one of two community forestry sort yards in Boulder County to see an example of how woody biomass can be collected and organized for residential and commercial parties.

Boulder County Parks & Open Space Biomass Boiler

Forest thinning efforts produce biomass used to fuel boilers at two buildings in Boulder County. At the Parks & Open Space Campus about 1,000 tons of woody biomass heat roughly 22,000 sq. ft. of facility space annually!

Next Up.

During September, our focus is on fine-tuning the second draft of the woody biomass data analysis through efforts to understand road access and treatment details. This month will also include the start of taking solution sets through the evaluation framework.

Partner outreach and engagement will continue throughout this project. If you would like to connect to discuss woody biomass analysis or utilization please reach out to Alicia Blake (ali...@cambiumcarbon.com).

In some cases, the volume of woody biomass generated through wildfire mitigation or forest health treatments is unmanageable and hampers the ability to easily undertake these treatment efforts. Simultaneously, there exists various potential avenues to utilize the wood. A local, common understanding of these associated challenges is paramount to increasing the pace and scale of wildfire risk reduction.

Underscored by a belief in the power of collaboration and coordination, we believe that together can work toward a future where a resolution of this challenge is realized. Please join us in our attempt to better understand this issue locally and with nuance, and help us in our effort to develop an action-ready strategy for the way forward.
