Estes Chamber of Commerce position on SB24-033:
Lodging Property Tax Treatment bill
The Estes Chamber of Commerce sent a survey out to the Chamber Membership on January 26th looking for your opinion on SB24-033. We wanted the Member feedback to help the Board of Directors develop next steps.
We received 92 surveys back with 80% coming from Chamber Members.
- 73% of the Chamber Members oppose SB24-033 as written
- 86% of the Chamber members felt that the Chamber needed to take a position.
With these facts in hand, the Board of Directors voted today on a position statement that opposes SB34-033 as written.
The bill is on the agenda for next week's Senate Finance committee meeting at 2:00pm on 2/20 in Denver. Often language for a bill changes as it progresses through meetings and we will be monitoring the bill and will keep you updated.
Statement of Opposition:
Statement of Opposition to bill SB24-033
After thorough discussions and multiple membership surveys, the Estes Chamber of Commerce stands in opposition to the proposed Senate Bill SB24-033, that seeks to raise taxes for short-term rentals. The Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce is issuing this statement in accordance with the wishes of the majority of responding Members, as collected from a Member opinion survey.
While the Members recognize the importance of parity, fair taxation and revenue generation for public services, they also believe that this bill as written overlooks crucial nuances within the short-term rental market and imposes undue burdens on both property owners and will negatively impact the tourism economy of Estes Park. As such, the Members urge lawmakers to search for alternative approaches to this topic.
