Dear Honorable Commissioners.
Please do not allow Platte River Power Authority to build a new gas plant. A new gas plant in our area is a step backwards in these times that folks are being encouraged to get rid of gas in their homes due to poor indoor air quality. AND our ground level ozone pollution is already, as you know, in non-compliance with federal standards. We are experience record breaking numbers of summer days with bad air quality, 40% of which comes from vehicle emissions, 40% from oil and gas development in our area. When these days occur, residents are encouraged not to drive their gas powered cars, but hydraulic fracturing and drilling continue, unchecked, unabated. This is unjust, at least, not to mention unwise, and unhelpful.
NOW PRPA is asking to utilize more natural gas, therefore driving demand for a product that creates such toxic pollutants that the ground level ozone damage to our health cannot be counted by good health practices such as exercise and a good diet. We are sitting ducks here--no way to defend ourselves against these assaults. You are our only defense.
We live in such a beautiful place. In Northern Colorado we love our open spaces. We protect our land and water. We love to exercise outside. Ground level ozone pollution is a black eye for us. It contributes to heart and lung disease. It reduces our longevity. We are told to stay indoors already way too many days in summer because of the demand that already exists for oil and gas development. Do you really want to create further demand in our area for a product, the extraction of which does irreversible damage to our health? Will you allow this backward motion, instead of moving forward toward renewal energy sources? How can you in good conscience take such a step?
You are our only defense against this continued assault on our physical health and this black mark on the beauty of Northern Colorado. Please protect us and move toward renewables, not back and deeper into dependence on fossil fuels.
Thank you.
