 Former Congressman Greg Lopez gathers over 11,000+ signatures |

Former GOP Congressman Greg Lopez has made the ballot for the governor’s race through the petition process at 11000+ signatures with at least 1000 signatures from each of our eight congressional districts. He’s running as an unaffiliated candidate. |
Lopez reports that 44 percent of his signatures came from unaffiliated voters so roughly 5200 of his signers are independent. That shows significant support from the voting electorate that will have the most important impact on the coming election. |
In the primaries between the Dems and the GOP, a majority of unaffiliated voters moved to the Democratic side. It would have been interesting to have a primary with Lopez on the ballot as could happen in a ranked choice voting situation. It would also be interesting if Barb Kirkmeyer had decided to do what Lopez did – run as an independent. She would give unaffiliated voters another good choice and no doubt outpoll Victor Marx in the general election. If Lopez does well, his vote production can offer proof that unaffiliated candidates can make an impact. |
As it is, the GOP has a candidate who barely won the primary and who comes to the general election promoting his “unseen spiritual war,” as described in this video. These mostly men spiritual leaders in the video would obviously have considerable influence if Marx were to win this election. |
Marx says that his real concern for this race is affordability and freedom. He states that freedom comes from fighting the demons that are out there. |
Marx says he will debate his opponents, Phil Weiser and Greg Lopez, once, without a moderator. He doesn’t want the media controlling the narrative. Actually, it would be a fascinating change to have an un-moderated debate, but that’s unlikely to happen. One can imagine the kinds of questions that might come up to spice the generally polite and public policy oriented usual governor debate formats. |
If Lopez can improve his campaign finance standing, currently at about $25,000, he could make some inroads within the GOP voter base. Democrats, way left, left, and center left, have coalesced around Weiser and his moderate running mate, Lesley Dahlkemper. That cohort should hold solid for the general election. Weiser is running up his fundraising, so he should be well positioned to handle whatever issues come up that may demand money. |
Eric Sondermann of Colorado Inside Out said that Weiser can go on vacation between now and November and he’ll win. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but bets should be placed on a Weiser win at this point, and the only question is the margin. Last I looked, Colorado Pols was running a line. |
