About the Eagle Award
Established in 1990, the Eagle Award represents one of the highest achievements for the Colorado housing community. This prestigious award celebrates the extraordinary accomplishments and outstanding leadership in housing and support services. The award honors individuals, agencies, projects, and programs that soar to new heights in their work to ensure safe, fair, affordable housing for all Coloradans.

Congratulations to Last Night's Eagle Award Winners:

Program: Hope Communities' Affordable Housing and Support
Hope Communities’ has helped thousands of low-income families achieve self-sufficiency and become productive, engaged members of the community, based upon the bedrock of affordable housing. The organization owns and operates
nearly 300 affordable rental units in three Denver neighborhoods; all of the units are rented at or below 60% of Denver’s AMI, providing housing for families from around the world. Hope has increased its ability to assist the growing number of refugee clients–adding staff with cultural familiarity and linguistic competencies from Burma, Ethiopia, Sudan, Afghanistan, among others.

Project: Walnut Street Lofts
Walnut Street Lofts is a five-story apartment complex with 66 one-, two-, and three-bedroom units that serve those earning 30-60% AMI. Sitting in the heart of the now-booming River North neighborhood, Walnut Lofts is part of ULC’s

Community Land Trust. ULC acquired the land in 2011 at roughly 12% of what it would cost today and embarked on an anti-displacement initiative by collaborating with neighborhood stakeholders, nonprofits, schools, and churches to identify potential tenants from the surrounding neighborhoods. As a result, 30% of the leases went to neighborhood people who may otherwise have been displaced. This project was developed by Medici Communities. It was designed by Kephart and constructed by BC Builders, LLC.
Project: Brandon Courtyard
Brandon Courtyard encompasses 103 apartment units, housing families and singles in the 30-60% Area Median Income (AMI) range. The development is conveniently located in west Denver, ½ block
from the busiest Regional Transit Bus line in the city and 4 blocks from the second largest city park. Organized to promote community among residents, the trauma-informed design features a top-level amenity area with a view of the lake and unobstructed views of the city and the Rocky Mountains. Counseling and support services are integrated into indoor/outdoor amenities on the ground floor, ensuring connection between the residents and staff. Volunteers of America was the developer for this project. It was designed by Shopworks Architecture and constructed by B.C. Builders LLC.

Project: Laurel House
Laurel House is a unique and dynamic supportive housing development with 34 apartments focused on housing youth exiting homelessness; it was awarded 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits in 2018.
Using resident-focused and trauma-informed design, the building’s spaces are designed to help youth heal and experience joy. Laurel House’s lobby, with a three-story atrium, natural materials, treehouse nooks, and a coffee bar made of natural wood, plays host to a variety of uses for residents, including interaction with guests, staff, and service providers. At Laurel House support staff walk alongside youth in a manner allowing them to thrive, not just survive, as they had been doing. This project was developed by Karis, Inc. It was designed by Shopworks Architecture and constructed by FCI Constructors, Inc.
Person: Renee Martinez-Stone
Renee Martinez-Stone directs the West Denver Renaissance Collaborative where she leads custom solutions aimed at minimizing resident and business displacement. For 25 years, Renee has provided leadership in redevelopment, transit-oriented development, and affordable housing projects through planning, design,
and community-centered engagement. She launched a community leaders program, training residents to understand development, land use, and zoning in order to better advocate for themselves and their communities. Renee has made a world of difference in the communities she serves. Recent notable projects include the 2010 Revitalization Strategy for the Welton Corridor, Mariposa & Westridge master planning, and advancing affordable ADUs with the West Denver ADU Pilot Program.
People's Choice: Residences at Hoffman
Located in Aurora, Residences at Hoffman is a new, multi-family, transit-oriented development that provides 66 one-bedroom and 19 two-bedroom apartments for seniors aged 55+ earning 30%-60% AMI.
The proximity to high quality employers makes this complex ideal for seniors still in the workforce. Walking distance from the Rocky Mountain VA Regional Medical Center, Residences at Hoffman prioritizes up to three one-bedroom units for age-qualifying veterans undergoing long-term care at the VA facility. This project was developed by TWG Development LLC. It was designed by The Studio Architect and the contractor/construction company was TWG Construction.
