KidsPak is a weekend hunger-relief program for students in the Thompson School District community, including Loveland and Berthoud. The program partners with schools in the District to provide much-needed packs of food that meet the nutritional requirements for students. Every food-insecure student in the Thompson School District is eligible for a weekend food bag. We currently serve 39 schools (early childhood, elementary, middle, and high schools).
The program partners with the Food Bank for Larimer County to create a specific menu each week to meet these nutritional needs. (Recent items included shelf-stable milk, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, mac & cheese, tuna, pears, applesauce, peaches, flavored granola, beef sticks, cranraisin, chicken, spaghetti, and pasta sauce.) An average bag contains 12-14 items and weighs 5-6 pounds.
When students attend in-person school, staff members will refer students to KidsPak with parents' or guardians' permission. We ask those who want to receive weekend food bags at school to contact a member of the staff at your student’s school, such as a teacher, counselor, health worker, or secretary.
For those attending school remotely and during summer break, KidsPak distributes weekend food bags only once a week at the same locations where the Thompson School District is distributing meals. Check our Facebook page for the latest information.
The Loveland Public Library (300 N. Adams Ave.) and the Berthoud Community Library (236 Welch Ave.) usually have weekend food bags available for pickup.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hunger Free Colorado began quarterly food insecurity surveys across the state to find out how the pandemic has impacted Coloradans’ access to food and economic security. The statewide survey in April found 1 in 3 (33%) of Coloradans are food insecure, meaning they lack reliable access to nutritious food. Although this rate is down from the December survey, this is still a historical high for Colorado.
Long-standing disparities in access to healthy food have grown dramatically due to the pandemic and 43% of non-white and Latinx individuals are now struggling to put food on the table, compared to 29% of white Coloradans.
Households with children also remain at the forefront of Colorado’s hunger crisis, with 44% unable to consistently put healthy food on the table, posing risks to the long-term health and well-being of hundreds of thousands of children across the state. Among households with children, 30% of adults reported having to regularly cut back or skip meals because there wasn’t enough money to buy food.
