Here I would like to introduce you Shen Yun Performing Arts (www.shenyun.org), a world-renowned classical Chinese dance company. Its mission aims to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture—much of which was lost when communism took over.   In Chinese, Shen Yun means “the beauty of heavenly beings dancing”. 

Shen Yun is a performance of classical Chinese dance as hallmark, along with a range of traditional Chinese ethnic and folk dance, of bel canto solos, and of an orchestra blending Eastern and Western traditions. It presents a cultural heritage with thousands of years of history, brings heartwarming stories that will uplift you and wholesome, positive role models onstage with 3D digital backdrops that extend the stage and transport us to a world where heaven and earth are one. Shen Yun dancers and musicians are trained at New York based FeiTian college.

In the West people are familiar with ballet. But there’s another classical dance form with a long history that has only recently burst onto the world scene. It is called classical Chinese dance. According to the Shen Yun website, "CLASSICAL CHINESE DANCE has helped preserve 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Built on traditional aesthetics, it was once passed down among the people, in imperial courts, and through ancient plays. Over thousands of years, it was constantly refined, eventually developing into the vast and distinctly Chinese dance form we know today."

Alongside ballet, it is also one of the most comprehensive dance systems known to humankind.

Whereas ballet's historical roots are firmly planted in European culture, classical Chinese dance is built on traditional Chinese aesthetics, the five millennia of Chinese civilization. Its origins go back to dances in ancient imperial palaces and folk traditions that were passed down through the generations.

As explained on the Shen Yun website, “The movements of classical Chinese dance are rich in their ability to express a variety of feelings, be it happiness, sorrow, joy, anger, grief, delight, the emotions that come with parting and reuniting, insanity, infatuation, sickness, tipsiness, solemnity, ignobility, majesty, as well as civil, military, and other personalities and stories.”

Classical Chinese dance training includes three main components—technical skill, form, and bearing. The high-level techniques of classical Chinese dance like flips, spins, and tumbling are incredibly demanding and include many movements not present in ballet.

Audience members are often curious to know if the flips and tumbling in Shen Yun come from gymnastics. Actually they originated in classical Chinese dance and have been adopted by other types of movement and performing arts.

In fact, you can see these thousand-year-old techniques show up in acrobatics, modern ballet, and even cheerleading.

How did this happen? Chinese gymnasts displayed these high-level flips at international Olympics competitions in the 1970s—surprising the world—so naturally, everyone else wanted to learn too!

Other than many types of leaps, turns, flips, spins, and tumbling techniques, Shen Yun also use a once-lost dance technique called ‘shen-dai-shou,’ or the body leads the arms, and ‘kua-dai-tui,’  or the hips lead the legs.  Those are unmatchable methods for elongating the limbs in dance, lengthening a dancer’s movements and poses.  The technique also improves the dancers’ ability to spin and enhances jumps and tumbling. It is deemed to be the most difficult of or the best in classical Chinese dance skills.

“Form” is a system of numerous distinctly Chinese movements and postures. But perhaps the most important part of the training is “bearing,” or in Chinese—yun (the same yun in Shen Yun). Yun is the inner feeling behind a movement. It is deeply connected to the dancer’s breathing and state of mind, and uniquely reflects a performer’s personality.

Classical Chinese dance has a special relationship with martial arts. The same technique used for fighting is martial arts and used civilly is dance. In ancient China, during grand celebrations in the imperial palace, generals would perform in front of the emperor. The same martial arts moves they use on the battlefield became an art form, dance. The Chinese language even has a clue about this—the wu in wu shu (martial arts) and the wu in wu dao (dance) are written differently but pronounced exactly the same. Sounds like Chinese culture Yin( dance) and Yang ( martial arts).

Ballet, from the West, and classical Chinese dance, from the East, are founded in distinct cultural heritages. In Western culture, when you approach someone you want to speak to, you would generally walk up to that person in a straight line. In traditional Eastern culture, you would approach this person in a roundabout way, through a circular trajectory. This difference can be seen in how ballet emphasizes linear, distinct movement, and classical Chinese dance emphasizes movements that are round and continuous, with no pauses. To go forward, the movement starts backward, and to go left it goes right first.  This is the culture difference between east and west.

However, Shen Yun Can’t perform in China, this is the show the Chinese Communist Party Doesn’t Want You to See.

New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, an ancient culture centered around harmony between heaven, earth, and humankind—a culture said to be passed down from the divine. This is everything the CCP has been working to destroy since the Party’s inception, especially during culture revolution.

During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) lead by Chairman Mao Zedong,   Ancient relics and antiques, calligraphy and paintings, classic books and scriptures were burned. Temples and statues were smashed to dust. The most important, it destroyed traditional Chinese value like "Filial piety, loyalty, faithfulness, courtesy, righteousness, integrity".  China’s 5,000-year-old culture was almost entirely wiped out.
