Making changes to Hive Editor

Hello,

I have a project to add a new panel at the top of Hive Editor (for company internal use).  The panel has to have checkboxes and calendar widgets.  When the user selects a value in either of these widgets, a SET command has to be issued (very much like settings in the Context panel).

Could I get help where I should start?

What types of SET commands are you looking at generating?
