CKAN v3 Roadmap

Hi All,

As per chat on tech team call today, it would be great to look anew at a vision and roadmap for CKAN v3. 

This is something that can and will include talking with users as well as developers.We can think more about the process for this, for example running some open calls. As per the call, I'm happy to take a lead on coordinating this.

Hello CKAN team,

First of all ; thank you for your involvement in the project.

I hope I am using the right communication channel. Since chat communication can be misinterpreted, I would also like to insist on the fact that my questions will help me organizing/rescheduling my tasks. My intention is not to put more pressure on the team.

I am currently trying to migrate the Belgian Biodiversity Data Portal (CKAN 2.5) and my boss asked me whether we should wait for the v3, since it will probably bring many changes to the architecture, extensions etc...

My questions are: 

- do you have a release date for v3 ?

- do you think it will bring lots of changes (especially for extensions) ?

- should I wait for the v3 before adapting extensions ?

Hi Francois,

First, great to hear of another CKAN-powered portal.

My advice at this point would be to target upgrade to v2.9 rather than wait on v3. This is for a couple of reasons: first, there there is no firm release date for v3 or an exact roadmap. Second, I would imagine that upgrading to v2.9 would be useful for any eventual migration to v3.
