Hi,

At today's meeting we managed to finalize the spec ahead of time for its LDML 48 release by merging the PR adding :percent. Our next meeting is in two weeks (Monday 25 August), and we'll be skipping the week after that as well on account of US Labor Day.

During the call we had a pretty good discussion of how to advance our goals, and this in particular prompted a number of action items:
  • Everyone:
  • MIH:
    • Update the ICU4J implementation
    • Send an email to the XLIFF TC, ask if there is interest in a new file format, and mapping MF2 to XLIFF, CC EAO
    • File issues for missing MF1 features
  • TIM:
    • Update the ICU4C implementation
  • EAO:
    • Submit spec for inclusion in LDML 48
    • Coordinate with MIH & LCA on initial requirements for machine readable registry definition
    • File PR adding preliminary attribute/metadata definitions
    • File PR adding message resource explainer for its incubation
At the next call we'll be reviewing progress on the above, and considering any new issues and PRs that are filed before then. We'll also be triaging our existing issues for what to prioritise for LDML 49.

If you've additional items for the next meeting's agenda, please reply to this email to add them.

Given how it's summer, I've ended up on a somewhat impromptu vacation, and I don't think we've had any reportable progress on the action items from last week, I'm rather tempted to cancel tomorrow's call.

Any thoughts on this? If I hear no objections or requests of agenda topics before the call, let's cancel this week and meet next on 2025-09-08.

The spec has been submitted to the CLDR-TC, but has not yet been approved. The editor's copy is now available here, with tooling automatically updating it from our markdown source files: https://unicode-org.github.io/message-format-wg/

The HTML version looks... sexy. And it's easy to navigate compared to the markdown. This is a great thing and I'm glad to see it automated!

I have no objection to canceling.

Internationalization is not a feature.
It is an architecture.
