Welcome to the latest edition of the regular Fugu + PWA update. Here, you'll find all the latest news about our work on the Fugu APIs, plus a sampling of recent work with partners.

As always, our project tracker is available at fugu-tracker.web.app .

M127

Features Releasing to Stable

Automatic Fullscreen

Chromestatus      Bug

Enterprise admins and users of Isolated Web Apps can grant a new "Automatic Fullscreen" content setting, which lets trusted sites enter fullscreen without a user gesture.

Combined with Window Management permission and unblocked popups, this unlocks valuable capabilities, like:

  • Open a fullscreen popup on another display

  • Enter multi-screen fullscreen with one gesture

Browser dialogs, like Print, may also appear without exiting fullscreen, when granted. The setting is blocked by default and prompting is not supported. Permissions API query support is planned for M128.

Automatic Fullscreen
Shortcuts! Not Apps

Bug     Launch Bug

Shortcuts! Not Apps helps simplify the options for creating deep links to a site on the Desktop OS surface that always launches in a new tab. It does so by modifying the behavior of the "3-dot menu -> Tools -> Create Shortcut" menu option to create a simple shortcut file on the user's desktop. This replaces the previous flow where the same entry point was used to create a Progressive Web App. Shortcuts, by definition no longer have any association with being installed or tracked by Chrome, which simplifies the feature, user expectations, and technical complexity.

Paired with universal install we now offer a simpler consistent model of installing any page as an app, or creating an operating system level deep link to a specific page.

This feature shipped to 1% Stable in M127 with progressive rollout to 100% Stable is planned for M128.

Please reach out with any questions, comments or suggestions.
