Hey folks - Microsoft is adding WCAG 2.5.8 to the requirements for minimum UI accessibility compliance in the next few months.

In the past Chromium has accepted accessibility fixes from us and adhered to level AA accessibility requirements in future work. I'm reaching out to see if there are concerns with the min-target size requirement for devtools UI and if fixes to problem areas will be accepted.

I've opened a bug here with some issues that have been raised already: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/333645514.

Please let me know your thoughts,
Kalon

Hey Kahlon,

We had a bit of a discussion about this on our end, and while it should be possible to meet the 24px requirement for a lot of UI elements, it will not be possible for all. One of the concerns we hear from developers somewhat frequently is that it takes up too much space already, and they need to be able to use it at small DevTools windows sizes. This is also one of the reasons why we cannot simply go with Google Material 3 spacings for DevTools.

Examples that won't fit the WCAG 2.5.8 requirements:
  • Any code or tree view (line height smaller than 24px)
  • Checkboxes
  • Almost anything in the Styles tab
  • Stack in the Sources panel
  • Navigator tree in the Sources panel
cheers,
Benedikt
