Hi everyone,

trying to install linux on a Asus chromebox CN60 (also tried on a CN62, same issue)

I've enabled dev mode, legacy boot, and created a usb key using chrome's recovery utility, pointing to a local linux image.

When I get to the dev warning screen, if I press ctrl-u to boot from the key, the box just beeps, flashes black and brings me back to the dev warning.

If I press ctrl-l, I see the seabios text (with version and build info) and "press esc for boot menu" After a moment I guess since it hasn't recognized any input, it displays "booting from hard disk..." but doesnt actually boot anything. just hangs there.

The current chrome os on the machine is known to be working.

Any ideas? I've tried different keyboards, all the different usb ports, same behaviour.

Thanks!

the recovery utility is meant to create recovery images.  if it isn't a recovery image, you probably don't want that.

what you describe with legacy boot sounds like correct behavior.  you need to have a legacy system installed first before you can try to boot it.

once you create a normal usb bootable image, you should be able to boot it via legacy boot iirc rather than ctrl+u.

sure, fair enough but I have also tried creating an image using standard methods. both linux and windows.

Also, I have read elsewhere where people have had trouble getting the machine to boot from a usb that doesnt seem to be recognized, that they still get to press esc and are presented with a choice menu of boot options (1. usb 2.hdd or perhaps just 1.hdd if the usb isnt recognized) but I dont get to that stage.

the list you describe (hdd/usb) is provided by the legacy boot interface.  there is no such interface in the default/native firmware (where you press ctrl+d or ctrl+l or ctrl+u).

did you enable usb boot too in CrOS ?

FWIW, there was a bug in SeaBIOS (the legacy bootloader) on some Asus Chromeboxes that prevented USB from working. John Lewis posted a fixed firmware here: https://johnlewis.ie/asus-chromebox-owners-rejoice/

If you don't intend to run the system as a Chromebox, you might also find Matt DeVillier's firmware images useful: https://github.com/MattDevo/scripts
