Since it seems there are basically two different base models (code/board names) for the ASUS Chromebook C300's, it's not readily apparent to me which one is which.

Is the ASUS C300MA the same'ish as the ASUS C300 both with code name 'quawks' which use the baytrail processor?

They seem to be quite different from the ASUS C300SA & C202SA with code name 'terra' which use the braswell processor.

The 'Developer Information for Chrome OS Devices' page, understandably, doesn't break out each & every device, it shows these two lines, among others:

February 29, 2016 ASUS ASUS Chromebook C202SA/C300SA Terra terra strago x86_64 3.18 x86_64 Braswell Chromebook
August 30, 2014 ASUS ASUS Chromebook C300    Quawks quawks rambi x86_64 3.10 x86_64 BayTrail Chromebook

The official page for 'Chrome OS Systems Supporting Android Apps' shows these similar ASUS devices, among others:
Asus Chromebook C202SA
Asus Chromebook C300SA/C301SA
Asus Chromebook C300
So I'm thinking the C300 listed above also refers to the C300MA (???)

One of the reasons I ask is there's some confusion among us in CBC about this.
It was also recently brought up by an OP in CBC who lives in Hungary where Chromebooks are not too prevalent and was considering purchasing the C300MA model but wanted to first be sure it would get Android apps at some point (in 2017).

Thanx in advance for any clarification,
-DennisL

looks like we've pulled up all BayTrail systems to linux-4.4:
  https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/431315
i've updated the dev page to reflect that for all the BayTrail systems

wrt confusing product names, you'll have to complain to the relevant partners about that.  Google doesn't tell them how to name their stuff ;).

ASUS's page suggests that C300MA is a slightly different SKU of the C300, so it should be a "quawks".
  2. 4G LTE model : C300MA-DH02-LTE *

but honestly, ASUS is the only one who can give you a 100% answer.

Mike,

Thanx very much for digging and the info. you provided.
I guess the only way to be sure is to find someone with the C300MA model and ask them to look at chrome:chrome

Thanx again,
DennisL

My Bay Trail Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Chromebook hasn't upgraded from the 3.10.18 kernel even though its last update was yesterday, so something must have stalled since the last comment (Feb 1) in change 431315.

It's very rare to see a kernel update. I wonder what's driving it, ARC++ or something else.

the change in question is against ToT.  it isn't going to be backported to older releases.

I have the Asus C300MA education editions in my district.  I grabbed one and opened up chrome:\\chrome and got these results:

Platform 9000.91.0 (Official Build) stable-channel quawks
Firmware Google_Quawks.5216.204.61

Ryan,

Thank you so much, that is very helpful and confirms that the C300 & C300MA are the same'ish.
At least enough the same to use the same board name & base board and will get Google Play eventually.

Thanx again,
DennisL

When we purchased the C300MA Edu version, the main selling points were 4GB of RAM and 32GB HD's and if I remember correctly, they maybe were built with a little sturdier frame.  Otherwise, they were the same.
