I have tried without success to create a copy of Chrome OS to run from a USB drive, as I have done before in the past on another Chromebook. Does anyone know whether this is still possible?

Yes. It can be done with ChromiumOS. I just boot into a image, run the installer and pass the device via the the --dst flag

Yes, I tried that. I was asking specifically about Chrome OS.

You cannot do that with Chrome OS

Do you know why the functionality was removed?

Correct me if I am wrong but I have never heard of an official way to do this with ChromeOS. Unlike ChromiumOS, ChromeOS is not open source and only ships on Pre-configured Chromebooks/Chromeboxes.

Daniel,

The /usr/sbin/chromeos-install script is still a part of CrOS but I'm not sure why it's not working, I haven't used it in years myself.
Are you getting any errors or warnings?

Yes. On a 8GB flash drive, I get an immediate invalid seek argument error, which I deduced means the space is too small from https://crbug.com/448631
On a 1TB hard drive, there appears to be some progress, but "Filesystem hash verification", "SetImage", and "PostInstall" all fail.

Daniel,

If you haven't yet looked at the source script it's here:

And maybe running xtrace 'sh -x ...' might help narrow down the error(s).

These are probably all things you've looked at but I thought I'd mention them just in case.

I was able to get the installation to succeed by recovering back to version 62. One of the changes since then to that script or other systems must have caused the problem.
