Hi everyone,

I just bought a pre-owned Pixelbook i7 with 16Gb of RAM and 512Gb storage. I really like it so far, but I ran into some problems. After doing power wash I got a message saying it is configured with a malformed hardware ID. I checked chrome://system and next to HWID it says "unknown". I'm not sure what happened to it and the previous owner says he doesn't know either. I found a tool to set the hardware ID mode... now all I need is to know what the proper value is. I've tried every possible Google search, but haven't been able to find it online. Does anyone know what it should be? Thanks a lot in advance!

Hey Daan,

Three colleagues of mine with an i7 Pixelbook all report: EVE D6B-A4E-B4C-F8N-P8A-A24

Which is different from my i5 Pixelbook that reports: EVE D6B-A6B-C4C-F8N-P8A-A36

Hope this helps,
~Denny

I have an i7 Pixelbook.  I asked 2 other friends to look at theirs.  All of us have "EVE D6B-A4E-B4C-F8N-P8A-A24" as the HWID.

There could be a HWID difference depending on the market region (US vs UK).

My HWID is slightly different: EVE D6B-A4E-B4C-F8N-P8A-A2N

the hwid encodes a number of details about the specific device you have (including details about the hw components in it).  as such, it's very hard if not impossible to tell you the exact hwid you should be using.  for example, it might change based on the version of the RAM chips, or battery pack, or touchscreen part, or storage firmware.  some of those cannot be looked up dynamically at runtime.

that said, not a whole lot changes behavior based on the hwid for Pixelbooks, so you're in luck there.  if you can find someone who bought a pixelbook with the same CPU/storage/RAM sizes as you, you'll probably be OK.

that said, if your hwid is getting rewritten, it means the write protect on the flash was disabled, and that's what sets up the root of trust on the device.  if you didn't do it, then the previous owner did it, and i'd be a bit suspicious of the system.  you could try going through our CCD docs to try & restore the original RO firmware on the system after restoring the HWID, and then reenabling the write protect on the flash to prevent further modifications.
