what is "TALIS" ?  can you post a link to the website in question ?

enabling usb booting is the same as pretty much every device -- put it into dev mode, then run:
  sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1
-mike

I think Jason is talking about Tails OS. (a privacy focused debian based distribution)

I also have a toshiba chromebook 2 and may also have to install a special version of coreboot in order for you to boot from usb. As far as I know some chromebooks require a special version of coreboot in order for the "sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1" command to work properly.

In my case, I bought my toshiba chromebook in 2013/2014 and running the command on the stock coreos procudes 2 beeps when booting off a usb.

It was not untill I installed chrx, that I was able to run install xubuntu and boot from usb like normal

You can see if your hardware requires a special version of coreboot and download it at
https://chrx.org/#compatibility

if its "recommended" I'm not sure the benefits of using the custom version of coreboot (from mattdevo or john lewis) over the stock version if the stock version of coreboot allows you to normally boot of usb.

Sincerely,
Jose

You may also have to enable 'Legacy' (SeaBIOS) booting, if your Chromebook supports it.
It's the same procedure only use 'sudo crossystem dev_boot_legacy=1'
See 'Legacy Boot' on the Acer C720 for more details.

I your Chromebook does not support legacy booting, then booting via usb will have to be done on a Google or privately signed image the way I understand it.

in dev mode, booting from USB "just" requires the disk image to use the right partition format and have the kernel have a verified boot header.  it's possible to convert existing USB images to such a format.  the keys/signing aspect is largely irrelevant.

Thanx Mike,

I knew there was some stipulation but couldn't find it when I needed it, too many bookmarks I guess.
