How do I disable the beep/chime that is emitted in situations such as pressing backspace on an empty omnibar?

I feel a bit silly for asking this question, since it appears as a super easy problem to me, but I have not been able to find the answer. The problem is annoying since I use the shell a lot in developer mode and the beeps are also apparent there and happen a lot, e.g., when a tab completion fails.

Hi Benjamin,

I didn't know a sound was made when pressing backspace on an empty omnibar. Are you referring to the audible bell in crosh/hterm?

Per the hterm FAQ, you can disable the audible bell sound by opening the javascript console (Ctrl+Shift+J) and entering the following:

term_.prefs_.set('audible-bell-sound', '')

Note: those are single quotes.

Hopefully that helps,

if you're referring to the SecureShell extension, it has an options page where you can control the audio settings

the built-in crosh app doesn't have such an options page, so you'll have to do as Aseda suggested there

FAQ no longer there, and term_ doesn't work:

term_.prefs_.set('audible-bell-sound', '')
VM769:1 Uncaught ReferenceError: term_ is not defined

- Disable:
Open the JavaScript console (Control Shift J) and type:
term_.prefs_.set('audible-bell-sound', '')

Further detail in:
/usr/share/chromeos-assets/crosh_builtin/js/nassh_deps.concat.js    :
[hterm.PreferenceManager.categories.Sounds, 'lib-resource:hterm/audio/bell',
   'url',
'URL of the terminal bell sound.  Empty string for no audible bell.']

- Still, easier, there is the extension/application (hterm) which allows to do it in graphical mode:
She interacts on:
html/crosh.html html/crosh.html (iframe)background pagehtml/nassh_preferences_editor.html (iframe)html/crosh.html (iframe)html/crosh.htmlhtml/nassh_preferences_editor.html
Modify, what you want, in the options menu.

- Enable:
term_.prefs_.set('audible-bell-sound', 'lib-resource:hterm/audio/bell')

PS: I have not managed to install a personal ring(local file), I do not know if it is possible. Apparently the local files is not possible, to see by hacking.
