Hi Mattias,

To modify the volume settings in Crostini, you can try the following steps to bypass the function key issue:

1.  Open the Terminal in your Linux container.
2.  Type alsamixer and press Enter.
3.  Instead of using function keys, use the arrow keys to select the audio controls and adjust the volume levels.
4.  If you need to access specific menus usually mapped to function keys (like F6 to select a sound card), you can often press the corresponding number key or use the Esc key to navigate the interface.

Additionally, ensure that the main ChromeOS volume slider is turned up, as the container's output is tied to the system's master volume.

Best regards,

Dylan

should a backup file be removed after an failed or completed backup?
i had anoter backup on g drive but it failed too
because the disc are almost full...
full? i cant see what is taking space
maybe some crostini stuff are sitll there
but i removed crostini

Mattias,

If the backup failed and the files are gone, you might just need to reinstall Crostini fresh and start over. It's usually faster than trying to debug a failed restore.

Did you check the Trash/Recycle Bin in the Files app too?

Thanks,

Dylan

Hi Mattias,

When Crostini is removed, sometimes the container disk image file doesn't get fully cleaned up, which could explain the missing space if you removed it manually.

If you can't start over, we need to figure out where that 95GB is hiding first.

Hi Mattias,

Crostini disk images are stored in a protected system partition that isn't directly accessible through the standard Files app. They are typically located within the stateful partition at /home/root/[user_hash]/crosvm/.

Since you mentioned that system files are taking up 95GB even after removing Crostini, it’s likely that the virtual disk image (.qcow2 file) wasn't properly deleted. To clear this space without a powerwash, you can try toggling the "Linux development environment" on and then off again in your ChromeOS Settings to see if it triggers a cleanup.

If that doesn't work, you may need to use the Crosh terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) to manually check for and stop any lingering crosvm processes.

Thanks,

Dylan

If by 'crostini setup saved' you mean you had a .tini backup file then a failed restoral attempt should not have deleted it.
If you still have a backup .tini file somewhere you can open it since it is a gunzipped tar file and restore the individual files & folders that you need to your new crostini container.

Mattias,

Okay, good to know, I use it too but that changes things.

'baguette' backups use the zst format to backup the whole VM image, so if you have a .zst backup file you would first have to decompress it using zstd or tar then mount the image to extract the files, not as easy as uncompressing a .tini file but I've found the baguette backup & restoral method much quicker & better.

Mattias,

You can loop mount an image file in Linux using the mount command with the -o loop option.

Also, I just heard from a colleague that hey ran into the same issue as you when trying to restore a baguette image, it failed and removed the .zst file.
That's a pretty serious issue and one worth reporting in the public issuetracker IMO.
