I am a student creating a Chromium OS image for my school district's aging computers. I have seen a way to upgrade Chromium OS to Chrome OS and I was wondering if this would be legal for educational purposes?

Thanks

Running ChromeOS on non-ChromeOS hardware isn't supported, and will probably break in weird ways at some point in the future.

As I think I've mentioned before on this list, nothing running on non Google Chrome hardware can meaningfully be called Chrome OS.  Verified boot and automatic autoupdates are two of the core features of Google Chrome OS --, both of which do not work on non-Chrome devices, as they require hardware support and special handling in the factory.

Anyone trying to tell you otherwise is leading you down the garden path.  Please, feel free to play around with Chromium OS all that you want, and even feel free to deploy it in your schools if you so choose, but be aware of the things that you're not getting and make an informed decision.

That is good information that I was not aware of. Thank you for the response.

Can anyone advise me as to the legality of this build of chromium as it seems to incorporate licensed programs such as flash and java?

Are you asking for a legal advice? These are rarely free and published on public mailing lists - especially technical mailing lists like this one.

IANAL but it's kind of obvious that since Flash and Java are not included in ChromiumOS they are not covered by ChromiumOS license and since ChromeOS can only be distributed with ChromeOS device you can not use ChromeOS license, too. So you need to actually read and discuss with your legal department the requirements of some other Flash/Java/etc licenses (for example regular free Flash's license says the following: "In all cases the Software is to be distributed in complete form and only for purposes of complete installation and use by the end user. The Software shall not be configured or distributed for use without installation.": http://www.adobe.com/products/clients/all_dist_agreement.html ).

It may be legal or illegal depending on nuances of your particular institution and ChromiumOS installation thus I doubt anyone here will give you straight answer.

Thank you for the response. No, I was not looking for legal advice but whether anyone had pursued this method before as I have tried to find more information on it and have come up blank. I can see now that I will need to use chromium os for my application. I would like to thank you all for your input.
