To the ChromeOS Team and Community,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the announced architectural shift toward Aluminium OS (ALOS) and its Android-based foundation. I am a dedicated user (with a device supported until 2031) who requires the simple, lightweight stability, and deep Developer Mode control of the current ChromeOS Classic environment.

The transition to ALOS, as described, appears poised to introduce unnecessary mobile bloat, complexity, and potential restrictions that fundamentally compromise the value of the Chromium OS platform for power users.

My Formal Request (Feature Demand):

  1. Permanent Opt-Out Feature: I demand that Google implement a verified, officially supported, and persistent user-facing option (not a hidden shell command) to opt-out of the ALOS update payload for the entire life of my device (until its AUE in 2031).

  2. Preservation of Developer Mode: A guarantee must be made that the core functionality of the Linux shell and Developer Mode remains intact and uncrippled in all future versions of ChromeOS Classic.

I have submitted a formal Feature Request to the Issue Tracker and urge the development team to consider the needs of users who choose stability and control over forced migration.

Please provide a clear path for users

who wish to remain permanently on the classic, Linux-based ChromeOS.

Thank you.

Frankly, I don't think anyone here has the power to determine any of this. Like the Stadia shutdown I'd say these things are decided at the top.

But we also haven't had any confirmation that existing Chrome OS devices will be migrated, it's quite possible that Chrome OS will be put in maintenance mode with no further OS changes beyond updates to the browser itself until EOL.

yes, a lot of the things raised here are "product" questions, not really "engineering" questions.  product teams tend to be "top down" and not generally forthcoming with the public.

that isn't to say customers don't deserve clarity, but unfortunately, none of the product folks will comment in these groups.  all i can do is refer to prior public announcements like:

and direct people to:

Where is that official announcement?

I still haven't seen one. I see third-party articles on people saying things, but I haven't seen anything official from Google.

Wait until the official announcement from Google. Don't panic. Relax.
