Try a hard reset:
    1. Turn off your Chromebook.
    2. Press and hold Refresh Refresh + tap Power Shut down
    3. When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh Refresh.

I don't believe 'ctrl+d' will work when invoking Recovery mode.

What are you trying to do?
How did you arrive at that recovery page - using 'esc+refresh+power' ?
What is displayed - 'Chrome OS is missing or damaged' or 'Please insert a recovery USB stick or SD card' ?

in addition to everything Dennis has said/asked, you can try pressing Tab to get extended debug info from the firmware

Tom,

That answers the third question I asked, what about the first two:

What are you trying to do?
How did you arrive at that recovery page - using 'esc+refresh+power' ?

It's hard to tell if you're having hardware or software issues or if this is just normal behavior.

Thanx,
~Denny

Tom,

Have you tried a recovery yet?
That may be your best alternative at this point.

Tom replied to me directly instead of through this forum so I'll repeat here what has transpired -

I asked Tom to perform a recovery and here are his replies:

I am going to try that tonight

So now...
Tom,

Sorry to hear the recovery did not work.
It would be interesting to know at what point it failed and what messages were displayed.

If you would please, power down the Chromebook then power it up by pressing only the power button, do not press any other keys.
If you get a screen that says 'Chrome OS is missing or damaged' or 'Please insert a recovery USB stick or SD card' then, as Mike mentioned, press the 'tab' key to get extended debug info from the firmware. If you could tell or show us the text that's displayed in the upper left corner, especially the hardware id and the recovery reason then we may be able to drill down on the exact cause and let you know what you're options are.

Thanx,
~Denny

Tom,

The 0x54 TPM read error is a serious one, unfortunately.
In my experience, it usually indicates a TPM error or internal storage failure.

The following somewhat unconventional procedure has occasionally fixed this issue but it takes time, patience and sometimes a little luck.

Step 1: Turn the Chromebook on - you see the 'Chrome is missing ...' or 'Please insert a ...' screen
Step 2. Leave it on for at least 30 seconds.
Step 3. Turn the Chromebook off.

Repeat these three steps until it either clears the TPM error and boots to Chrome OS or it keeps failing.
You may have to repeat this up to 25 or 30 times or so, see this video for proof of this method.

It actually worked for me a few years ago with my Acer C710 and it's still running to this day.

I wish you the best,
~Denny

P.S. Please respond in this forum rather than email so that others can track this problem and possibly benefit from it, thanx.

I am having the similar issue regarding my Acerc710 Chromebook. I installed on of the stock firmware and tried to install from the recovery .bin files that I downloaded from the internet. The recovery  .bin files that I downloaded from the internet don't work, they just take an hour each to say that unknown error.... so I have to turn the Chromebook pressing the power button. Now the Ctrl+D doesn't work anymore however the tab button or Ctrl+I works that displays the left top messages like below:

HWID: PARROT PETREL A-C 6559
recovery_reason: 0x02 recovery button pressed
VbSD, flags: 0x00000670
VbNv, raw, 70 20 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 d4
dev_boot_usb: 0
dev_boot_signed_only: 0
TPM: fwver=0x00010004 kernver=0x00040001
gbb.flags: 0x00000000
gbb.rootkey: 9f59876c7f7dc881f02d934786c6b7c2c17caac
gbb.recovery_key: 7f03c648d2bb4ab3979cb87633da51ed90267f03
read-only firmware id: Google_Parrot.2685.37.0
active firmware id: Google Parrot.2685.37.0

and after failing to recover the second line goes like this:

recovery_reason: 0x17 RW firmware version rollback detected

I have even removed the HDD and formatted twice.

I am not being able to boot this device anymore with USB.
