Chromebooks won't update when the OS is too far back. Assuming that your device is not past its AUE date and is still eligible for updates, you will need to do a manual update using the Chrome Recovery Utility from the Chrome Web Store

I don't know how out of date they can get before they won't
automatically update but I have seen it before personally and read
other people's experiences too. It isn't terribly long from memory.

Shauna,

Your '2019 Samsung Chromebook  13" XE503C32-K01US' / peach-pi has reached the Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date of Jun 2019 and will no longer receive automatic updates so versions 75.0.3770.144 / 12105.100.0 are the latest available for your device. The AUE page linked above states:
  • Even if a Chromebook is no longer receiving automatic updates, it still comes with secure mode. The Chromebook does a self-check every time it starts up. If it detects that the system has been tampered with or corrupted in any way, typically, it will repair itself, reverting back to its original state.
That may give you some peace of mind if you want to continue to use that device, otherwise, you'll need to get something newer.

Hey Mike,

Maybe you can clear up something for us.

Some of us do support in the Chromebook forum and have run into issues where the user cannot update their device after they are a certain number of versions behind, we're not sure of the number but it may be around 10. We told them that they would have to perform a full recovery to get an update.

But, according to your remarks above, this should not be the case, we thought this was a design feature but perhaps it's a bug, not a feature.
If they should be able to update their device without regard to their current version, it is not happening so we should probably ask them to send a feedback report documenting the problem so that it can be addressed.

Any insight you have concerning this would be much appreciated and help to clear up this possible misconception we have.

Thanx,
~DennyL

yes, it's a bug, please have them file feedback, and maybe even a bug report if they're up for it.

cutting off automatic updates at 10 versions would be a terrible unboxing experience. it's not uncommon for devices to be initialized with an older golden image in the factory, then sit on shelves for a while before someone buys it. we don't want the user to have to buy a USB stick and install a recovery image as their first step.

Mike,

Thanx for your reply, we'll start asking users who run into the update issue to file a feedback report with the hashtag #wontupdate, and the next time we encounter one we'll either have them file a bug report or we'll do it ourselves.

Mike,

A feedback report with the hashtag #wontupdate has been filed and a bug report opened at the link below for your reference.
A Googler marked it as ''Status: Won't Fix (Infeasible)' but it appears in #c2 that they really didn't understand the issue.

Thanx for your help with this issue.
