Hello all,

I am very upset that this feature does not work because I bought a chromebook for my ageing mother who lives in another country, and I need to be able to show her how to do things.

I see many other posts from people who have bought chromebooks for their parents because chrome is simple, fast, reliable, but this gap is a HUGE gap, and I am sure will turn off a lot of potential buyers.

Please could you look into this with some urgency, you would make a lot of people very happy!

Cheers,
Mark.

Are you using the official hardware with the official builds with chrome os (does it say chrome os or chromium os on boot)? If so you should already have plugins for hangouts. If however you are using chromium os on official and non-official hardware then you will have to install the plugin.

Hi Jamison,
Thanks for the response.
The chromebook is my mother's and she is in South Africa, it has not been modded at all, so presumably it's the regular Chrome OS.
Are you saying that with plugins, hangouts works WITH remote desktop, ie I would be able to control her chromebook from my PC in the UK?
I had heard hangouts did not work with remote desktop (via hangouts or the remote desktop plugin)... is that true?
Thanks,
Mark.

Are you trying to use Hangouts to control her chromebook or Chrome Remote Desktop (here). With Hangouts you can't control a computer. You can see her desktop if she chooses to share it. The best way to control a chromebook is with  Chrome Remote Desktop.

AFAIK you are mistaken. You cannot control a Chromebook using Remote Desktop. You can control a PC FROM a Chromebook, but not the other way round.... which is why I started this thread.
SEE here for dozens of other people who also have the same problem I have

I find myself in the same spot. I just purchased a Chromebook for my parents, partially because I saw so many posts about Chromebook Remote Desktop, making the idea of tech supporting them fairly easy. I am seriously shocked to find out that I can't access the chromebook remotely. They get a "this feature not available, stay tuned" message whenever we try to activate it. Frustrating to say the least. Is there no work around yet?

I have the exact same problem. This chromebook was bought for a 74 yr old with no prior experience. I had also planned on using SKYPE to communicate, but you can't install it on Chrome. This was a bad purchase.
