I have some XP labs (currently using disk freeze hardware) which our GApps school could convert to Chromium OS, but instead of having an installed OS, I would prefer to boot over the network and store user files in a tmpfs, discarded on reboot. Has anyone tried this? Gotten it to work?

we have devs doing PXE boot and an NFS root, but only one-offs for development.  i don't think anyone has looked at doing large scale deployments.

Mike, I would be interested in doing this in a large environment. Could you provide me with some details as to how they are going about doing this?

Best regards

if you search dev.chromium.org for "nfs", the top few hits should cover things.  be warned that they might be a little stale ...

I've been looking at similar scenario as well.  A fellow Director of IT is using Citrix's Provisioning Services to assign VDI images to each device based on MAC address.  He's doing what you want to do, but with Windows 7/8 instead. Theoretically, if you set up a "Golden Image" using the hardware of your lab and Chromium as the OS, it would work.  I can talk to him about doing a test scenario.

If you were able to find a PXE solution, I'd love to hear about it.

Hi Stephen,

I have also been working on the scenario to connect old 'diskless' XP machines to a purpose built 'server' running chrome OS.  The idea is to have the thin client machines connect to chrome os over the LAN using iPXE to flash the rom on a compatible network card (http://ipxe.org/howto/romburning).  You mentioned a 'Golden Image' of Chrome OS. Does this enable multiple thin clients to connect simultaneously or do we need to build a box with multiple Chrome OS VDI images for each thin client?

I would be interested to hear how you went with the test scenario.

The solution that my cohort is using would allow one VDI to mount on multiple devices.  When I approached him on setting up a Chromium OS for a test image, he said he was busy this summer and may try it once school starts (as mentioned before, he's a Windows/Citrix shop).
