I bought a ssd disk for the C7.

Followed some incorrect advice on the web, or maybe I just didn't follow it closely enough.

Created a bootable usb stick with the LinuxMint installation image.

Removed the C7 hdd, put in the ssd.

Tried booting from usb.

No joy!

Comes up with a screen telling me to:

Please remove all external devices to begin recovery.

So I remove the usb stick

It says:

Chrome OS is missing or damaged.
Please insert a recovery USB stick.

Yes, it's devinitely missing.  Hope the LinuxMint install .iso is close enough.  No it's not.

The device you inserted does not contain Chrome OS.

How do I get an installation .iso image into a form acceptable to CrOS?

Have not been able to find a good step by step guide.  Have found some arcane discussion, but no clear answer.

No it's not - the ChromeOS boot process is very different to a normal PC
(in a couple of ways the C710 isn't fully "PC compatible" insofar as
that is still a real thing).

Newer x86 chromebooks allow you to use the 'ctrl-l' combination at
power-on to boot via the traditional PC boot process, but on the C710,
if you want to use something which is expecting a PC OS boot process,
then you currently need to change the BIOS for one which uses
coreboot+seabios, such as the ones built by John Lewis. I think this is
off-topic here because it doesn't have much to do with ChromiumOS, so
I'd more further discussion elsewhere...

Perhaps you need to find out, then write a the step-by-step guide?

Tim.
