chrome os as a file server

can chrome os act
as a file server.. I have a chromebox with usb3 ports to which I would like to attach a hard drive and share it with windows

currently, CrOS cannot do that normally.  only by putting it into developer mode and installing custom software would make it possible.

thanks.. if I set that up in developer mode and 'return' to chrome os interface will the file server continue to operate in the 'backgroud'

yes, all code you run in developer mode stays running as long as you don't close the shell (e.g. crosh).  perhaps you want to look at Crouton.

Additionally, you would have to open up the proper ports in iptables.
Even while you ate in Crouton,the same iptables settings apply as the ChromeOS settings, which don't allow any inbound connections.
