The below link list doesn't include Tegra K1 Acer Chromebook 13 but it has HP Chromebook G4 which has ARM and X86 version.

I think Play Store for Chromebook is not supported for ARM Chromebooks.

Why is it?

I think it will be much useful to port Play Store for Tegra K1 Chromebook with Vulkan API support.

we had to start somewhere, so we started with all the latest devices that had the latest kernels.  as it rolls out and stabilizes, we'll evalulate how far back the feature will become available.

What a ugly cans of worms scenario this created when this should have arguably never happened in the first place. I hope there was at least some opposition internally to running Android apps in Chrome OS.

Why? This was inevitable. ChromeOS and Android were destined to be merged from the very beginning (Google CEO Eric Schmidt said so publicly in 2009: http://androidcommunity.com/android-and-google-chrome-os-may-merge-closer-in-future-20090710/ ) and this was confirmed many times since. The question was always about execution, exact details of the process, not about the fact that it should happen.

Are we talking about the existing runtime or about the idea itself? The idea itself was there from the very beginning while existing implementation may STILL not be the final solution. As Eric Schmidt reiterated in 2013 Google wants to merge them "in the right way": http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/21/chrome-android-still-merging/

So, I'd say it's not quite promising to wait for Play Store for my HP Tegra K1 Chromebook 14.

It's really sad

the kernel version is new enough on nyan based devices, but the nyan graphics stack has been difficult to get onto freon, and afaik that will be required for Android support.

For Tegra K1 processor, Nvidia Shield Tablet uses the same processor and it supports CUDA 6.5, OpengGL ES 3.2, OpenGL 4.4, and Vulkan API 1.0 and Nvidia has Jetson TK1 board driver source code available.

Could that help to develop play store for Nyan based Chromebook?

I know that the previous version Nyan based Chromebook had CUDA and OpenGL hardware acceleration but since ChromeOS 41, Google dropped CUDA support.

I think it will be much easier for developers to support Play Store for Nyan based Chromebook if they roll back the kernel and support CUDA 6.5.

sorry, but none of the details you've outlined there are relevant to the issue at hand.  Play Store does not care about CUDA.

Because you mentioned about graphics, I thought it was about lack of graphics API support for Nyan based Chromebook.

Sorry about that.

It IS about lack of graphics API. Specifically you need freon: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Chrome-OS-Freon-Graphics

I'm not sure about status of freon on K1...

BTW, I think Tegra Chromebooks are still using x11 display server and that's why it does not support Crouton hardware acceleration because the kenel does not let run two x server at once.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

yes, afaik, nyan boards (like the one you have) are the only ones still running X.  all others have migrated to freon.

Sorry for off topic, if Nyan based Chromebooks are still running X, why would Google drop CUDA support?

And, I hope there's a way to run play store on Nyan based Chromebook with X if possible without Freon. Will there be a way? Or, Does Nvidia have to make a way to support Freon?

i don't think we use/care about CUDA in Chrome OS.  that said, nvidia provides drivers to Google, so if you have questions about those, you could ask on the nvidia forums.  the git log for changes in this space is almost entirely drops from them:

as for public roadmap wrt freon/android on nyan, i don't think there is one, sorry.

I remember that I have read about conflicts between ChromeOS developers and Nvidia developers about developing Chromebook driver. If I remember correctly, Google developers don't want full API supports but Nvidia developers do. And, that's why Google dropped CUDA support.

I can be wrong.

Thanks for your reply. It's really sad that my Chromebook does not support Play Store.

I bought this Chromebook just because its computing power is stronger than Intel's. I was thinking of using Linux but I can't get working hardware acceleration so it's really laggy on Linux side whether it's Crouton or other dual booting system.

Thanks again for your fast response. I really appreciate it.

I tried Ubuntu Precise/Ttusty with Crouton, Arch Linux ARM with ChrUbuntu-like script way dual boot, and Kali Linux ARM with USB dual booting way.

None of then had hardware acceleration.

Arch Linux was lack of command support and lack of hardware acceleration. Lack of command was I think it's because it uses the same kernel as Chromebook. The script copies and pastes Chromebook kernel. I wasn't able to read the code but at least the comment said that.

Kali linux ARM had full command support but it was lack of hardware acceleration. I think it's because Kali Linux ARM uses the same kernel as Arch Linux ARM but they probably modified it. So, what I'm thinking is that if I use the the old Chromebook kernel, I will be able to have hardware acceleration but I can't get it to work.

Try compiling your own with gentoo, might have better luck that way.

I'm only familar with Ubuntu based distro's. I just searched Gentoo ARM, but they didn't have one for Tegra based Chromebook but only Samsung Exynos Based Chromebook.

I'm not a developer and I don't know how to port to devices.

Thanks for your advice

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Embedded_systems/ARM_hardware_list

This list shows a someone who was successful with the Acer chromebook 13.

There unfortunately isn't a dedicated handbook just yet for arm processors, but you can follow a different architecture guide and replace where you put the arch with ARM.

It's a good learning experience if you have time to give it a shot.

Bounjour Mike!

Maria Here.

I bought my HP 11 G4 in 2016 after checking with the list of chromebooks awaiting updates for Play Store compatibility. At the time the list said it would be completed by the end of 2017. Lo and behold, here I sit with my little chromebook, battered and cookie crumbed, awaiting its day in the sun.

No luck.

I'm the equivalent of a 90-lb weakling here in Chromelandia. But I was expecting access to a much greater diversity of software. To my dismay, the list now says the update is "planned."

1) Any idea if/when said update might appear?

2) If not, or the update isn't coming any time soon, any suggestions where and what type of chromebook I might buy? Just a basic chromebook like the HP G4 would suffice. Ease of maintenance would be great as well.

Goodness knows if you still even respond to this forum but what the hay?

If you read this, thanks for any response you provide.

Salud, Dinero, y Tiempo para Gastarlos!

I have been waiting for the same for quite some time now.

The laptop is now kept boxed until such time that we are blessed with an update.
