I'm looking to buy a laptop and have been weighing my options for some time now.  The main reason I need it is to get remote access to systems where I work.  The way I usually do this is by starting an ssh session to one of my systems with an encrypted tunnel to port 3389 on a desktop system (remote desktop protocol).

A chromebook is ideal *if* it has an ssh client that can do encrypted tunneling and if the rdesktop utility is available.  The problem here is that I don't want to spend $300+ dollars on a laptop if I can't use it the way I need to.  Furthermore, there isn't any documentation anywhere that would tell me if these utilities are available.

If you have a Samsung Chromebook 2 and can answer this question, it would be much appreciated.  Bonus points if you also don't use the standard QWERTY keyboard layout and can comment on how well rdesktop behaves in that situation.

Thanks.

you probably want to use the product forums to discuss your options:

there is an ssh Chrome extension (that works on any platform, not just CrOS) that does port forwarding:

i have no idea what rdesktop is, but you should search the CWS for things

Thanks Mike.  While I appreciate the redirection, where am I supposed to post when all of the referrals lead around in a big circle?  I posted here after posting in another forum where I was told, "this forum is for X and you're asking about Y.  Post your question here, instead".

rdesktop is a utility for making remote desktop connections to Windows based computers.  It would be part of the OS installation the same way the ssh client would be.

the forum i referred to is about any question related to Chrome OS.  your question is on topic for this forum as well, but there are few people here unlike the other forums i referenced (where there are many many people).

Chrome OS doesn't include apps/utilities (by design) in its install.  applications are all installed via the CWS.  the advantage of the CWS is it works on any platform that Chrome works.  so you can go ahead and install Chrome on whatever OS you're using and try installing the apps and see if they satisfy your needs.

If you have to use the windows remote desktop protocol, there is a chrome app for that: chrome-rdp: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-rdp/cbkkbcmdlboombapidmoeolnmdacpkch?hl=en-US.

You can definitely do this using Crouton (if you don't mind having your device in developer mode) and probably using the other means mentioned in this thread too...

A gentleman by the name of Taylor LeMasurier-Wren has made some packages available for installation on Chromebooks in Dev mode that include 'rdesktop', I've used it and some of the others and they work well. You can check them out here - Chrome OS Packages
