I have a Broadcom 4312 and been itching to try out chromium OS, but
when I had tried it, it didn't recognize/use my Broadcom Wireless card
at all. :(

...And its too my understanding that the driver for it supposedly is
available or at least done for chrome OS and just not released to
Chromium...

The b43 driver is part of our kernel sources since it is in the
mainline kernel, but not enabled. The driver is the easy part -- the
hard part is that you also need firmware for your card and Chromium OS
doesn't have a redistribution license of that firmware from broadcom,
so it can't be included in the images.

You won't find the firmware for b43 included in any linux distro for
this and/or other reasons. Some of them will include a tool that
downloads it and installs it, but none of them will directly provide
firmware images.

Technically I was thinking of the bcmwl-kernal-source, but Fedora has
it...well the b43 anyway, already. Ubuntu 11.04 I think has the bcmwl-
kernal-source...granted don't matter in that case sense that version
seems to be broke. At anyrate Broadcom has sense joined Linux
foundation and has been open sourcing their drivers, so I don't see
really see the issue.

I believe we have a summer intern adding support for more devices in
chromium os; hopefully he (they?) can look at the Broadcom driver.
But understand that adding wireless support isn't necessarily just a
simple matter of enabling a driver in the kernel. We need drivers to
support nl80211 (not WEXT) and to do it right. As always we're happy
to take patches from the community. If you submit a change list
through gerrit and assign review to me I will look at it. Please be
sure to indicate your testing when you do this.

Hi

I have been working with broadcom folks to get their wl driver updated to work with the latest kernel change in chromiumos.

Once done, broadcom will publish their package.

The work has been going very slow.... Your patience is appreciated.

Yup... just sorry that it is apparently taking so long... wish things would move faster... :-)

As things move along, I'm happy to post updates to the list...

Dear Doug,
I try to build the broadcom wl driver(chipset:43227, pid:4358) in
chromiumos for Acer 5750G but
the wl driver in kernel can't worked, and the wl.ko i downloaded form
the broadcom website also compiled fail.

Is there any solution about the broadcom wl driver(chipset:43227, pid:
4358) in chromiumos ?

I found one chromiumos image for dell mini notebook, which broadcom wl
driver can work. Can i use that wl.ko in that dell chromiumos image?

I can confirm that this image will correctly (or did with mine) build
your wifi drivers as long as you follow Dougs really good guide. The
latest image is here:

http://linux.dell.com/files/cto/ChromiumOS_x86_May13.img.gz

In the read me there is clear guidance as to how to install the wifi
drivers. Try the pen drive version first, install the wifi drivers,
reboot and then test if the wifi has worked. If you then wish to
install it on your dell there are also easy to follow instructions.

Let us know how you get on

Sorry to resurrect this topic, but it seems to be exactly my issue.
I have tried to run Chromium on my HP Mini 210-1000 and it works
absolutely brilliantly, minus a very repairable sound issue, and
unfortunately no broadcom support.
What I attempted to do was extract the firmware from the broadcom
driver using fwcutter and just kinda... Stick it into the /lib/
firmware directory.
(I followed the process here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
)
I had a feeling that what I was doing was not going to work, but while
I have gotten this far (or at least I feel like I have), is there
something I could do that would make this process a viable one?

I will eagerly await a solid fix and support from broadcom, which
seems to be underway, but in the mean time is there any hope for what
I am doing?

Any progress on this so far...looking out the window here in windy wet
England and realising summer is over now :( I have had the dell may
image running more than successfully for a fair time now but would
naturally welcome developments in getting the Broadcom wifi issue
sorted once and for all.

More than happy to help test on a Lenovo s10-2 to extend bug fixing

With regards to the sound issue if you have not seen elsewhere you can
edit your sound in a terminal by typing
shell
sudo alsamixer

and then adjusting or unmuting your speaker ( which you may see has 2
small Ms) tab across and unmute it (by pressing m!) and then use your
arrow buttons to adjust sound levels
You can then save this setting with alsactl store

Thanks to another guy here I found an interesting guide which may help
others here to try to build from source.

It is from the Linux wireless site and I thought it gives a really
clear guide. However you will need a development version of Chromium
with the right tools to build packages from scratch

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

I worked it out that I think we would need the 'other' version .

Anyone else tried this?
