Hey all, I'm attempting to boot Chromium OS from USB on my Acer Aspire One small netbook. After the Chromium screen appears, screen goes blank and then computer shuts off. I've tried three different builds/images, and the same thing happens with each one. Should I keep trying other builds, or is there something else I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Can you boot other distributions on your Aspire One? My guess would be that the ChromiumOS kernel lacks driver support for your laptop. If the computer shuts off, perhaps it is overheating due to a missing thermal/fan control driver, or if CPU frequency scaling is not working properly.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure I know exactly what you mean by "other distributions." Chromium OS is the only os I've attempted to run on my pc (besides vista and win7, which I had nothing to do with the installation of these systems). It makes sense to me about it lacking driver support, though. I don't recall the fan running during startup (as it would normally during startup). What are my options here? Does each build use the same kernel or is it possible to find other builds with a kernel that does have driver support for my laptop?

My experience is that Chromium OS works great with certain laptop models but when it doesn’t work, you are looking at a big uphill battle in terms of adding drivers and getting certain plugins to work. You can always submit a request to Hexxah or Arnold the bat to compile certain drivers.

I would recommend installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and then just adding Google Chrome so you can take full advantage of Google Drive + apps and at the same time you benefit from having a full OS and is very fast and fully supported. I have Ubuntu running on an 11 year old Optiplex GX270 and on a Toshiba NB 200 Netbook and it runs great. Our school board was sending these machines directly to recycling and now we are able to give these machines new life.

Thanks Marc. I think I will go ahead with Ubuntu, though I think I'll go with 13.10. The main reason I was looking to get Chromium was because I read so much about how it runs smoothly even on old laptops. Mine came with Vista and I upgraded to Windows 7. Not too much longer after that it began running pretty slowly. If Ubuntu runs well on old computers, I'm definitely willing to try it.

Hey,

I have it working on my aspire one (ZG9 - really old build - older then yours i believe as windows 7 wasn't available at that time)
I used the latest image of Hexxeh. (http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/)

With initial hardware configuration it boots in 35 seconds. Wifi and network works perfectly.

I swapped the 160GB hdd for a 30GB sdd today and upgraded my memory and now it boots in 14s and looks wonderful. Much faster and better then any linux i've tried on it.

Only issue i have is that the build of hexxeh is >1y old.  There's no way to upgrade, other then compiling chromium myself.
Because of this, the store gives me a warning that my chrome version is no longer supported and i seem unable to do anything about this.

steps i took:
- download latest hexxeh image
- put it on a stick
- login with the stick
- give in google account
- then goto Ctrl-Alt-T and "install"

kr,
lizi

Most of the Aspire One's use a Generic Broadcom wireless.  I got one working with arnold's broadcom build, which is also about a year old.  He has a how to on his site.  To get it working on a newer build, you will have to compile a new wl.ko driver from Broadcom's source, which is listed in the comments.  Here's some other notes that may be helpful.
  • compile the broadcom driver (wl.ko) on a device running the same kernel.  To get the kernel of your chromium build, press Ctrl+Alt+F2. Login as chronos with password of facepunch or password. Then $ uname -r
  • If you get the "insmod: error inserting ‘/lib/modules/3.4.0/kernel/net/wireless/cfg80211.ko’ : -1 File exists" it means that that module is already installed, you don't need to worry.
  • To show what all modules you have installed, you can run the command less /proc/modules

It turned out to install? What does not work? Also I want to install Chrome OS, but on the Acer Aspire Switch 10 do not know what problems will arise?
