Out of the hundreds of HP Chromebook 14's that we've set up so far, one arrived with the Factory Floor image on it, and gbb.flags set to a non-zero value.

I have done a USB restore, but it's still in dev mode.

Is this something that we can "restore" easily?  I haven't tried any of the methods that might rewrite the bios yet.

Thanks,

Albert

To erase the gbb flags (which are likely the reason for the device
being stuck in dev mode) use the command:

/usr/share/vboot/bin/set_gbb_flags.sh 0

Hi Albert,

That device should be returned - it is not likely to be in a good state. I have added Jean, who should be able to help here.

Yup, and my opinion is to return it as well.

The log status looks like it passed the factory test.

WP is definitely not enabled  (flashrom --wp-status shows disabled).

I already did a USB restore, and it looks like it pulled an AU, so I expect the HWID and reg code are *probably* valid.

This one just managed to slip through HP's QC.

I'm almost... but not quite... tempted to keep it to have a sample without write protection and not put it in student's hands...

Anyways, thanks!

I also wanted to let your team have a chance to know that it has happened at least once -- and if it was something we could fix ourselves, I was going to be more than happy to do so.

'Specially since we've got thousands of 'em coming in.  This is the only one of about 850 we've don so far that was in this state.

Thanks,

Albert

+1 to Jean and Simon's opinion to return the device.

1. The device didn't complete the factory test. -> Maybe
2. The HWID might be invaild. If the HWID is not valid it won't get the AU.
3. Registration code might be invalid.
4. WP might not be enabled. It means that the device is not secure.

Albert,
Agree with Simon that the safest method might be to return the device and exchange for one with correct OS installed.

If you are interested to restore it on you own, here are some tips.
Vadim's gbb reset flag needs to be run so you can get out of dev mode.
You might want also to remove W/P screw, run firmwareupdate to make sure RO FW is sound. then recover using USB.

I can help you with the firmwareupdater extraction if you want to go this route. Ping me directly and i can share instructions.
Jean

Hi Guys,

I tried this command and it worked. I had a unit where the HP SHIM image wouldn't work so I used a image from Chrome and used commands to add serial number to the unit. But I couldn't get it out of DEV Mode. So I tried this and it worked. Thank you.

Does this command also work on a Lenovo chromebook x131e?

Please note that although you might be able to get a device
like this working right and properly configured, that's not
not a guaranteed prospect. Given that the manufacturing
process already failed in one way, it may that it failed in
others that you can't fix. In particular, if the gbb flags
aren't 0, I think that means your device isn't write-protected;
it's likely that that's not something you want to try to fix.

The manufacturer is reponsible for making units with properly
installed software and firmware. If you got the device new,
you should send it back and ask for a refund/replacement.

at this point, you've asked the same question 3 times.  please don't do that -- it's considered spamming.  ask it once and wait for someone to respond.
