The laptop has an EFI Bios and after I chose booting from USB, I was led to the grub2 screen with 5 options, namely:

"local image A"
"local image B"
"verified image A"
"verified image B"
"Alternate USB Boot"

I checked the grub.cfg file and everything seems to be right with these menus. I've tried to boot from hard drives, boot a qumu vm and boot from usb on a desktop which already has Chromium OS installed, none of them asks me to choose which partition to boot from. According to https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chromiumos-design-docs/disk-format, which partition to boot from is already decided before bootstub is invoked, so why did I see the grub2 screen in the specific situation described previously?

Thanks!

Sounds like you're booting with legacy instead of uefi
