This and modern laptops in general have very little opportunities for hardware upgrades, this includes most Chromebooks as they rely on soldered down components. A small number of Chromebooks do use a m.2 nvme drive and some chrome boxes have slotted RAM - that is the extend of upgrades. None have swappable motherboards or upgradable processors (except for the framework Chromebook edition which technically has some upgrade paths for a few components.
As Mike said, you are better off buying a laptop to suit your needs as it would be far more economical. You can technically install Ubuntu or other Linux distros on most Chromebooks, there are plenty of guides to do this and the process may vary based on device. Your performance will differ based on the hardware you are running but it's of course possible.
