Failing to boot frUSB

Hi folks
Chromeos novice here, first attempt at build and install
I've built a test image (amd64-generic/R122-15713.0.0-d2023_12_16_155519-a1/) following the quick start. It looks to run fine under 'cros vm ...'. But when I copy it to USB and try to boot my Dell chromebook 3120 (Candy?), I get the Chromeos logo for about 30 seconds before the screen refreshes and I'm back to the developer mode "OS verification is OFF" screen. When I try to boot from the USB a second time, I get a splash screen saying "The device you inserted does not contain Chrome OS".
Anyone got any pointers on what to do / where to look, please?
