Hello,

I am setting up some desktop computers for an inner city community center.  I have about 10 desktop computers that are 6 or 7 years old that run Windows XP.  The problem is that Windows XP is very maintenance intensive (virus updates, windows updates, etc).  Chrome OS would be a much better solution for this environment.  The problem is that I can’t get a version that will run.

The best so far has been Hexxeh’s Lime version, but even that just comes up with the Chrome OS flash screen and then hangs.

What I need is someone that knows Chrome OS and can build me a custom version that will run on this hardware.  I can’t offer any money (I’m not making any either :)), just the satisfaction of helping the less fortunate get onto the internet and making a better life for themselves.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey LintStalker,
Have you checked out Dell's ChromiumOS builds --> http://linux.dell.com/files/cto/
Or as Rajesh suggested you could just go with one of Ubuntu's (or another distro) long term supports. Ubuntu 12.04 || Ubuntu 10.04

Hey LintStalker,
So I successfully installed the Feb20 2013 Dell build on an Asus EeePc (not sure eabout the model now). But I suppose you may encounter driver issues with older machines.. I guess it could be worth a shot though.. Not sure what the latest is with flash issues. I think Hexxeh's builds came without flash, but you'll find forum threads where people provide instructions on how to install pepper flash on Chromium OS. In fact here's something: http://goo.gl/hMv0a
I've now Lubuntu on the same Asus netbook:http://lubuntu.net/
