Hiya,

One of the ways I've been considering learning more about the basics of ChromeOS and be in a position to make some simple contributions was to look at devices like google speaker and try custom builds.  Today I came across a mention of OnHub and that looks like a really interesting target.

Is it complex to update these sort of devices with a custom build? USB? TFTP? Is there missing functionality from an OnHub router that runs an unofficial build?

Just curious, TIA for any guidance, pointers to documentation, etc..

Best,

JR

the main routing software is currently not open source.  so you could build & boot an image, but it wouldn't function as a Google WiFi device anymore, you'd have to do all the routing/WiFi management yourself.

I don't think there's even a public overlay for it, so it wouldn't be trivial to boot an image at all.

I would love to see a port of ddwrt or openwrt for the onhub.

Google On-Hub routers run the same Chrome OS firmware (based on
coreboot/depthcharge/vboot) as normal Chromebooks, with the same
concepts of developer and recovery mode. It doesn't look like we
provide official documentation of how to access it, but I can't stop
you from searching the internet for unofficial guides such as
