Has anyone ran a virtual machine within Chrome OS successfully yet within the Crostini container? If so how? I have been trying to install Virtual Box to run Windows for a few programs that Wine and Codeweaver's Cross Over are just not working on. Thanks again. I was directed to this group by the Admins in another forum.

Hey,

Does anyone know where the documentation is for running a VM on a Chromebook?

Officially I am not sure if the Chrome Team will publish one. Let me see if I can throw something together to explain how to get Qemu running sometimes this week. I will say that it wont perform very well on many of the lower powered Chromebooks and will perform slightly better on high-end ones.

It is better to run LXC containers on Crostini which will perform much better, you would be limited to Linux distributions however

If you're using an official Chromebook this won't be totally relevant, but for anyone working with Chromium OS on PC/Mac hardware, it may be worth mentioning that CloudReady's Free Home Edition includes experimental support for Virtualbox (64bit only).

It isn't bug-free, but generally has been working for us.

It is mostly for visual studio work.

At my school, we use visual studio in computer science.
But we are moving the school to chromiumos builds.  (if we can get them booting)
We would also like the ability to still use visual studio, but there is no online version of it.

At the moment we have been going through hundreds of online IDEs but cannot find one as good as visual studio.
But now I think about it, Having a VM run on old hardware just to get visual studio would be a bad idea,
not only for speed but for maintaining policies (Disabling: cmd, PowerShell and C drive access).

Adam,

But we are moving the school to chromiumos builds

I think what Mike might be alluding to when he so subtly stated:

so you want Crostini on the devices ?  did you try enabling that ?

Is this news that I just came across today:

It might be worth investigating or even trying out for your application.
