So before I realized what had happened, and I was suddenly and without warning unable to access my own network on my HP Chromebook, I wiped it clean and started fresh believing that that would fix the problem. So joke's on me, as when I restarted, I was only able to operate as a guest user, so when I set_time, it's really just for cosmetic purposes, because my system thinks it's in California, not Massachusetts. As soon as I exit guest, the time reverts to PST. As far as I can tell, the only way I can fix this would be to fly to the west coast and set up the Chromebook there, but I'm hoping this is a common quirk, and that someone has a better idea.

sorry, but what is the problem ?  set_time changes the clock, it doesn't change the timezone.  if you want to change the timezone, you can follow the public docs:

It will allow me to set the timezone, but as soon as I log out guest, it reverts to the wrong timezone. And I can only access command line as guest.

Restoring network access seems like the next step (e.g. use a different network if you're unable to connect to yours). The Chromebook should detect the correct time zone, and if not, you should be able to set it manually with the steps that Mike sent after logging in as a non-guest user.

(Side note: this is a development mailing list. Please use the Chromebook Central Help Forum or the chromium-os-discuss mailing list if you're still unable to update the time zone. If you think you're running into a bug, please file an issue at http://crbug.com/new.)

changes in guest mode, by design, do not affect the system.  iirc, the system timezone is set based on the timezone of the first person to log in.

so if your issue is "guest mode's timezone settings aren't sticky", then that's not a bug.  if you have another concern, please clearly describe your problem.
