I have HP Kip machine running on Chromium OS R59. It's equipped with Infineon TPM.  Recently there is a vulnerability issue found on Infineon TPM. The fix is to update its firmware. I tried to update Infineon Firmware following the update instructions.  But I run into an issue that TPM Self-test has failed and the TPM has shutdown.

I attached the photo.  Someone mentioned that by rebooting the machine 25 times can reset TPM and fix it. I tried to reboot 25+ times without luck. Does anyone have a clue on how to fix the issue?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Just to clarify a couple things first:
1) By the update instructions, do you mean Chrome OS instructions here: https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/tpm_firmware_update#TOC-Installing-the-update ?
2) If you were following those Chrome OS instructions:
-) Am I right that you have upgraded to R61+ first? R59 doesn't contain the fixed firmware images and the updater.
-) At which step did you see the failed self-test error? Was it step 7? Was there any indication of an error earlier in the update progress, could the power have been lost or reboot happened while the device was performing the upgrade at step 6?

At the first glance, it seems the update step 6 failed or was interrupted. Rebooting the machine won't help in that case.
You will need to go through the steps in the "Retrying a failed update" section of the instructions to recover from this state, and use a R61 build 9765.81.0+ (or later versions, details on version/build numbers here) recovery image.

I have seen this a few times over the past year with numerous CB's.  In fact, I just fixed one with the exact same error code: 0x54.  It usually means one of two things:

1) TPM error
2) SSD drive failure

What you need to do is power up to that screen for atleast 30 seconds.  Then, turn off.  Then, power up again for another 30 seconds, then turn off.  You repeat this cycle until it either clears the TPM error and boots to Chrome OS or it keeps failing until 25 to 40 times.  If it doesn't work after that, more than likely you have an SSD failure and will need to either call in your warranty or buy a new system board or SSD drive if your CB supports it.  Some older HP G1/G2's support removable SSD's.

On occasion a hardware reset can get you back in business too, might be worth a shot anyway...
    1. Turn off your Chromebook.
    2. Press Refresh Refresh + Power Power.
