What does Chrome OS recovery image do internally while printing "Your system is repairing itself. Please wait."?

1. Does it just run `chromeos-install` command to copy data to target hard drive? Is there any documentation regarding to this process?
2. I'd like to customize my installation, so is there any way to get Shell access after recovery firmware discovered and boot  into USB drive?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Directly answering the question in the subject line:
Essentially, what happens when the "Your system is repairing itself"
appears is that the system runs an automatic Powerwash.

No. chromeos-install can only be run when booted from external
storage like a USB stick.

To customize, you'll need to flip your device to dev mode, and
then either 1) install a custom build, or 2) do whatever customization
you want after booting in dev mode.

Note that if you run recovery with a device in dev mode, shell access
will be available as soon as the device boots after recovery.

Thanks for replying. Richard.  I just posted a noob question, recovery mode are well documented on chromium.org. I should read that first.
