Per the developers guide for Chromium OS, the current official Ubuntu version is 18.04, which is hitting EOL in March of 2023.

Wondering if Google has decided on a new official version, and an approximate date for transition? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

With a sufficiently powerful Chromebook I've been able to build within the Debian environment of Crostini in the past. If they get  additional distros beyond Debian working as a UI option like WSL, I'm sure you'll be able to use 20.04 or 22.04 before long.
