I can not make my acer c710 to change to dev mode. I tried installing another Linux distribution by dual booting my Chromebook but the installing didn't finish and now my I can't change channel. I always get the "CHROME OS MISSING!- INSERT A BOOT-ABLE DEVICE/USB" . I got this error from my system:

Hello Rufai,

Sounds like you need to recover your Chromebook. Instructions for creating recovery media can be found here: https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1080595?hl=en

Best,
Dave

if you were able to run a custom linux installer, then you were in dev mode

if your install rewrite the disk partition in a way the firmware didn't like, then you'd get the missing/damaged screen.  you'll need to run recovery as Dave said and try installing again.

I have recovered my OS and am writing from it but when ever I want to change channel to dev mode it brings the recover OS error. I am in Chrome OS(Stable mode) now and can't access my other channels.

dev mode is not the same thing as dev channel.  they are completely orthogonal.

so which is it ?  do you want to just change the channel to dev (which is known to be more unstable), or do you actually want to put the device into dev mode (which gives you a console shell) ?

What instructions are you following to install linux? Are you using the Chrubuntu script, or something else? Have you tried installing with Crouton instead ( https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton ).

Switching channels has nothing to do with dual booting, you probably don't want to switch to the developer channel, you just need to enable developer mode for either Crouton or Chrubuntu to work. Instructions for that can be found here: http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices

I tried the Crouton initially and it worked fine but I went back to stable mode and decided to try the ChrUbuntu script which didn't complete its installation. All I want is to be able to get into dev mode from there I can find my way through Crouton to Ubuntu.

I have tried the instructions at http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices/acer-c7-chromebook but keeps asking me to recover my OS which have done on several occasions.

when you put the device into dev mode, it is normal for every boot to have a scary warning.  hit CTRL+D to get through it.

Okay, now am in! Will you advice to switch channel to Beta or Developer-unstable while in dev mode to start working chrome os development.

I will not advise you to use your Chromebook as a development machine, unless you are working in a very specific part of the OS and want to test on a real device.

For your information, most development works are done on really beefy machines with many CPU cores and huge amount of RAM. Have you read the "Prerequisite" section on http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-guide yet?

Cheers,
Nam

Right. The best way to do development *for* Chromebooks is to build on a beefy Linux desktop and then boot the resulting image on your Chromebook (in developer mode). Once you've built and installed your own image, then there are shortcuts to let you do incremental updates to the Chromebook from your build machine.
