adding /etc/init/ files only work when upstart is the init.  if you try to run the shell as init, then no config file in /etc/ will ever matter, and you don't get job control like the FAQ explains.

you could always launch sshd in the background and then ssh into the machine and do your debugging that way.

But I am not able to find out how to run the shell on my ttyS0. I tried playing around with /etc/init/ttyHSL0.conf, but no luck.
