Web Speech API audio sources

As far as I can tell, there’s no way to use a speech recognizer on any audio other than user mic input. Is there any technical or other reason why the API couldn’t also use, e.g., a WebAudio source node as its input, so it could be used to transcribe audio files or other sources?
